Type Locality and Naming

It was named by Liu Yuanzhen, Yuan Zaishu as the “Maoxianling Sandstone” in 1951. The naming section is located at Maoxian Ridge in the vicinity of the Sandu Coal Mine of Zixing County, Hunan Province.

Synonym: (茅仙岭组)


Lithology and Thickness

Composed of grey-white medium-, and fine-grained feldspar-quartz sandstones, with its upper and lower parts being intercalated with a small amount of black mudstones, containing inconsistent coal beds, with a thickness of 450-500 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It is in a disconformable contact with the underlying Xintianmen Fm

Upper contact

Regionally, the schematic strat column indicates the next younger unit as Shigu Fm

Regional extent

It is distributed largely in Zixing and Yizhang Counties, as well as in the Nuanshui area of Rucheng County.

Fossils

In the Sandu area of Zixing County it yields such plant fossils as Equisetum sp., Coniopteris sp., Dictyophyllum nathoristi, Thaumatopteris sp., Phlebopteris sp. and Todites denticulate.


Age 

Schematic strat column in previous "red Chinese Lexicon" had implied that the Maoxianling Fm spanned the Toarcian.
